5 Benefits of Custom Foot Orthotics

There are 26 bones in each foot - our feet are highly complex structures and are responsible for supporting the whole body throughout our daily lives. Any alterations or changes in your foot structure and alignment can create changes up the kinetic chain into the ankle, knee, hip, and back. These are known as biomechanical changes. Custom orthotics are used to correct foot alignment issues which cause biomechanical imbalances over time. These changes can cause medical conditions such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, Achilles tendonitis, heel spurs, and arthritis to name a few.

To have a pair of custom orthotics made, your health practitioner will take a detailed health history with height and weight, assess the range of motion and joint play of the joints in your feet, and then perform a gait analysis. This assessment will determine whether you can benefit from custom orthotics, what materials are selected, what features are implemented, and the level of rigidity that may be required for you. It is important to get assessed by a trained professional knowledgeable in custom orthotic design. A 3d impression of your foot is then taken to create a digital mold of your foot in order for your orthotics to be made.

Now for the 5 Benefits to wearing Custom Orthotics!

1. Corrects biomechanical imbalances by providing support

Orthotics provide corrective support for the arches of your feet to provide stability while you stand and walk. Custom orthotics are designed specifically for your arch shape and size ensuring full contact with your feet. The specific design for your orthotics is determined during your assessment.

2. Reduces Pain

Malalignment in the foot structure such as flat feet or high arches can cause pain in other areas of the body. This happens because of compensatory changes in the movement of the ankle joint, the knee joint the hip and into the lower back. Custom orthotics can alleviate pain in the body by eliminating the need for the body to compensate for poor foot mechanics or alignment.

3. Allows for Peak Physical Performance

Custom orthotics allows you to reach a state of peak physical performance. When at the top of your game, every improvement matters. Custom orthotics can allow weight to be distributed more evenly across the foot, improving balance, reducing the amount of strain and force your body needs to deal with which allows for more efficient movements.

4. Injury Prevention

Our feet are the foundation of our body and we spend time on them everyday. Custom orthotics can prevent and treat many issues of the muscle, tendons, ligaments and the bones of our feet. Specific injuries such as medial tibial stress syndrome, plantar fasciitis, knee pain and even back pain can be prevented using Custom foot orthotics. Custom made orthotics reduce the risk of injuries by 28% and reduce risk of stress fractures by 40%. Simple over-the-counter insoles did not produce the same protective effects.

5. Improve overall health and wellbeing

We all spend time on our feet everyday... standing, walking, jogging or running. Reducing and preventing injury at the base of your body can alleviate pressure in other parts of your body and improve your overall health and wellbeing. If you have less pain, you will be sleep better at night, and you might be more active!
